2005: Best Films of the Year Here is my annual top 10 best films of 2005. This post will be updated over the next few days.
1. Crash Many have not forgiven the film's slight contrivances. Look past this and you will see that the film supplies goosebumps-inducing scenes one after another as it deals with racial prejudice in the present North American society.
This films stands very strongly with repeated viewings. I've seen the movie at least five times, sharing it with friends encouraging intelligent open dialogue in the process. This daring film with an A+ acting ensemble and crisp writing is the the most powerful, draining, and poetic of any films this year.
Here is an article by Roger Ebert in defense of Crash.
2. Constant Gardener
3. Sin City
4. Brokeback Mountain I feel almost priveledged to have seen the film back in early September before the critic groups started to hype it as one of the year's best. It is. Months have passed and the film still has a haunting quality to it as I reminisce of funny subtle moments like when Jake Gyllenhaal fails to catch the car keys thrown to him by his father-in-law when his wife Anne Hathaway gives birth.
I took note of how ironic (and fitting) that the film's credits were missing at the beginning and was only shown at the end. The film opened with 'Brokeback Mountain' in mere small caps, and small font. In the end, the movie is a simple and quiet love tragedy, and it's beautifully affecting at that.
5. Munich
6. Pride & Prejudice The film contains one of the most romantic scenes I've ever seen in recent memory. Keira Knightley is radiant.
7. The Squid & the Whale
8. Syriana
9. The 40-Year Old Virgin It's not only the funniest movie of the year, it's also the sweetest one with genuine heart for its characters.
10. King Kong
Runner up (in order): Millions, Capote, The Upside of Anger, Murderball
