2005: Best Singles of the Year

Instead of compiling a list for best albums for 2005, I've decided to do Singles instead. It'll be easier for everyone to relate to a single than an entire album, n'est pas?

As you will see, I focused on mainstream material. Here's my Top 10:

1. Gold Digger by Kanye West featuring Jamie Fox
There's really no need for me to justify my #1 choice. It's funny and off-beat, alongside with a Ray Charles sample. With more serious songs like Diamonds from Sierra Leonne, Kanye proves he can also get down...girl... go head... get down...

2. Since You've Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson
I was never a fan of Ms. American Idol... but she won me over with this self-freeing anthem. On a recent review in Eye Weekly magazine, it reads "Nominally, the single's about barrelling through a bad breakup, but it's actually a tossing off of reality show shackles as Miss Texas defiantly declares her independence."

3. One by Mary J. Blige featuring Bono from U2
The most riskiest song to re-record turns out to be one of the most inspired remakes I've ever heard. By the time Mary sings to a cresendo effect of "You ask me to enter... but then you make me crawl...", you can't help but applaud.

4. Hollaback Girl by Gwen Stefani
Gwen is an underrated artist. Sure this song is fun-sort-of-silly, but she gave us the catchiest song of the summer: B-A-N-A-N-A-S anyone?

I'm sick of the song, but after reading this indepth analysis I had to hear it again. You probably will too.

5. Colors by Amos Lee with Norah Jones
Amos is regarded as the male Norah Jones. She even does backup vocals and piano for this single. But really, he's more than that. He's a wonderful songwriter and lyricist.

I'll use this platform to promote Amos. I saw him perform live. I had goosebumps for the entire evening. He rocks. Buy his CD.

6. Dance Dance by Fall Out Boy
This band rocks! My vote for the Grammy's Best New Artist goes to this group.

7. Sunday Morning by Maroon 5
This is Maroon 5's best song to date. Too bad not many others caught up to this single.

To add to this, I confess I have an emotional attachment to this song. It's a good song for passionate... errr... bed-thumpin' on a... ahem... Sunday mornin'.

8. Hung Up by Madonna
It's contagious. It's gay. Arguably Madonna's best single since Music.

9. Ordinary People by John Legend
A beautiful elegant song.

10. My Humps by the Black Eyed Peas
I really don't care for this song. But everytime I hear it play at a club, it's irresistable. It also proves that the mainstay girl of the group Fergie should go solo.

Honourable Mentions:
* Boulevard Of Broken Dreams
by Green Day
* Heard 'Em Say by Kanye West featuring Adam Levine
* Window by Fiona Apple
Too many songs to pick from her album Extraordinary Machine, I finally had to settle with this one.
* Quando Quando Quando by Michael Buble and Nelly Furtado
The steamiest duet of the year. I'm disappointed it didn't have any Grammy recognition

So this is my list. Agree? Disagree? Additions? Let me know what you think.
