In the Words of Katharine Hepburn...
I've been reading this book about the life of Katharine Hepburn, arguably the greatest motion picture actor of all time. She's a driven firecracker-of-a-character, bursting with a passion for life. "Oh, I'm endlessly fascinating," she tells Pulitzer Prize biographer, A. Scott Berg.
The book was released less than two weeks after her passing. Hepburn didn't want to release details about her thoughts and encounters with numerous famous celebrities while she was still alive. One of the funniest passages in the book involves having a peculiar dinner with Michael Jackson.
Having said that, there are moments in the book that resonate with me. I felt compelled to share them:
* After her failed marriages, the book offers revelations of her 26-year relationship with Hollywood screen legend, Spencer Tracy. Between the years 1962 and 1967, Hepburn put her career on hiatus to take care of her ailing man. "Because for the first time in my life," she said, I truly learned that it was more important to love than be loved." (pg. 34)
* In regards to Spencer Tracy's drinking problem:
"Did you ever think of walking out?" I asked, our eyes now meeting.
"What would have been the point?" she asked. "I mean, I loved him. And I wanted to be with him. If I had left, we both would have been miserable." (pg. 212)
